OUR MISSION
A PLACE TO CONNECT, GROW AND BELONG
The Depot Youth Center supports the well-being of Darien’s youth by giving them meaningful opportunities to connect, grow, and give back.
Serving students in grades 4–12, The Depot provides a safe, supervised, substance-free environment where teens and tweens can build friendships, develop leadership skills, explore service, and experience a true sense of belonging. Every program we offer is intentionally designed around positive youth development — helping young people thrive socially, emotionally, and academically during their most formative years.
Located at 25 Heights Road in the former Noroton Heights Train Station across from Darien Commons, The Depot is more than a building. It is a consistent, welcoming presence in the lives of Darien’s young people. Look for our iconic blue caboose!

Rooted in Positive Youth Development
At The Depot, prevention happens through connection.
Our programs are designed to strengthen the protective factors that help youth succeed:
-
Confidence and leadership skills
-
Healthy decision-making
-
Empathy and community engagement
-
Social and emotional resilience
-
A strong sense of belonging
Through clubs like SADD, empowHER, Student Governing Board, SLOD, Volunteer Club, VolunTWEENS, Girls&, Smiles for Seniors, and more, students take active roles in shaping their community while developing lifelong skills.
More than 300 teens and tweens visit The Depot each week through clubs, drop-in hours, and programming. Over the course of the year, thousands more participate in events, leadership initiatives, life-skills classes, and milestone celebrations.
Meeting a Real Community Need
Darien is often perceived as a community without significant need. Yet today’s teens face intense academic pressure, overscheduled lives, digital overload, and rising mental health challenges. Stress, anxiety, and isolation are increasingly common — even in high-achieving communities.
The Depot provides a critical counterbalance: a judgment-free, inclusive space where youth feel seen, supported, and connected. Students consistently tell us they value the friendships, community, volunteering opportunities, and sense of belonging they find here.
Student Voice at the Center
Students are instrumental in everything we do. Through leadership roles and student-driven initiatives, young people help design events, lead service projects, run community fundraisers, and shape the culture of The Depot.
The Depot is not programming created for teens — it is programming built with them.
Growing to Meet Demand
In recent years, demand for youth programming has expanded significantly across grades 4–12. As municipal teen programming shifted, families increasingly turned to The Depot for structured, supervised social opportunities.
We have responded by:
-
Expanding middle school programming
-
Launching large-scale, inclusive events like our Senior Pre-Prom celebration
-
Piloting half-day experiences for 4th and 5th graders
-
Increasing experiential and off-site programming
-
Strengthening leadership and service opportunities
Our goal is simple: ensure every Darien teen and tween has access to a safe, developmentally appropriate place to gather, celebrate milestones, and build healthy relationships.
Community-Powered
The Depot is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
We are funded through:
-
Individual donations
-
Signature fundraising events such as the Overstuffed Turkey Trot, Darien House Tour, and Winter Online Auction
-
Corporate sponsorships
-
Local and state grants
-
Program fees
-
Endowment and reserve stewardship
Because Darien does not qualify for many traditional needs-based grants, strong local investment is essential. Community support directly enables us to maintain staffing, expand programming, increase weekend hours, and meet growing demand.
Accessible to All
The Depot serves more than 3,500 Darien youth across public, private, and homeschool settings. We are committed to financial accessibility. Through partnerships with Darien Human Services and Darien Public Schools, we provide confidential scholarships so that cost is never a barrier to participation.
A Steady Presence for Darien’s Youth
The Depot is led by Executive Director Amy Daniels and governed by a 15-member Board of Directors deeply rooted in the Darien community. Together, staff and board provide mission-driven leadership, strong governance, and hands-on support to ensure long-term sustainability.
As youth needs evolve, The Depot remains steady in its mission:
To ensure that every Darien teen and tween has access to a safe, welcoming place to connect, grow, and belong.
